  The objective of this program is to examine the electronic and physico-chemical properties, the stability, and the dynamics of nanometer-scale structures and of components that may be used in such structures. These structures and components may play key roles in evolving or even revolutionizing devices for communications, sensors, and detectors. Our understanding of these structures is developed using unique scanning tunneling microscopy instrumentation which gives us the ability to work at low temperatures, to manipulate surface structures, and to work at microwave frequencies. We collaborate with key developers of molecules and films such as Allara, Barton, Tour, and Whitesides to screen and to advance the properties of the components, structures, and films they create.

• e. Most significant results during the last year
  • First, we have shown how to connect our measurements of the electronic properties along the length of single molecules to electron transfer in biology, electrochemistry, and the mechanism of scanning tunneling mciroscopy. We are able to quantitate the transconductance of the molecule or film under study, to separate the contributions of the molecule and the tunneling gap, and to understand the limits of STM imaging of organic films.
  • Second, we have found experimental examples of effects that we predicted where adsorbed molecules affect their surroundings via electronic interactions sufficiently to greatly enhance reactions by pre-aligning reaction intermediates or to build atomically precise structures.

• f. Brief summary of plans for next year's work

  We will examine the electronic properties of a variety of molecules to understand the effects of varying functional groups, surface attachment, backbone identity and substitution, etc. We will assess and attempt to enhance our ability to manipulate the structural and electronic properties of isolated and bundled molecules tethered to surfaces.

  From scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, we are able to compare the transconductance of adsorbed single molecules and organized films. The exponential decays measured are consistent with those found for saturated chains in biology and electrochemistry.

• b. Supporting viewgraph #1 The plot shows the contribution from the molecules in the film -- the line defining the shaded region -- and the tunneling gap outside the film -- the steeper descent from the former line. The top shaded area shows the regime in which the STM probe tip would penetrate the film. At higher tunneling gap impedances, there are contributions from both the tunneling gap and the molecules as indicated.
