TRANSCONDUCTANCE OF SINGLE MOLECULES AND FILMS

The plot shows the contribution from the molecules in the film -- the line defining the shaded region -- and the tunneling gap outside the film -- the steeper descent from the former line. The top shaded area shows the regime in which the STM probe tip would penetrate the film. At higher tunneling gap impedances, there are contributions from both the tunneling gap and the molecules as indicated.
